Crosley 307-TA restoration part 2
We let out the smoke in part 1 but still managed to get a raster. Now let's see if we can get an image on the screen. Watch as I chase my tail before realizing my test CRT is wonky.

    oh wow a total series on my set!! Totally amazed people drop off sets to be worked on. you must either have a fan base or very well known in your area. Had thought years ago Id try to get peoples tvs and radios working up to the 50s but never got past the nostalgia of I keep everything I own!!! Never bought stuff if I didnt like the looks/coolness of it.

      Still have a few more episodes to go, but it's just about done. I'm somewhat well known but more so I'm one of only a handful of folks that restore TVs for customers. Most like yourself only maintain their own collection. I have a backlog years deep at this point!

    In the beginning of your video you talk about the electrodes (obviously you mean electrons) coming out of the gun and flying towards the screen. It may have been pointed out in your earlier videos but it should be mentioned that the emitted electrons have very low speed and will not fly towards the back of the screen spontaneously. As I understand it, it is the high DC voltage that is placed between the gun and the back of the screen that accelerates them towards the screen where they hit the phosphor that emits light as a result of the collision.

    • @bandersentv
      @bandersentv 2 дні тому

      Yes, there are two (sometimes 3) accelerating anodes in a picture tube. One in the gun assembly after the grad at a potential of around 300 volts to get the electrons moving towards the screen. Then the final anode which is typically around 9,000-16,000 volts.

    Very interesting stuff! Looks like it is coming along greatly. I have been finding many of those 270 pF IF coupling caps to be bad in these sets, between 630 based chassis as well as the 621TS. Sorry that the test CRT is causing the brightness issue!

  • @billharris6886
    @billharris6886 2 дні тому

    Hi Bob, it seems there is always something to be learned with each restoration. Since I have never worked on that model, I pulled the schematic to see what you were up against. If I remember correctly, I think the TV by itself consumed 285 watts, and 320 watts in a combo configuration, which used a separate higher power audio amplifier. The coupling capacitor value in the IF amp chain determines the IF bandwidth (a larger cap value produces a wider bandwidth and, so on.). Your discovery of the brightness problem (which you found by trial and error) is a regular part of my troubleshooting technique, especially if problem symptoms don't make any sense. I call this a "Reality Check", which consists of substituting out test equipment and test fixturing (one by one) to double-check that it is actually functioning correctly. This may sound far-fetched at first but, the technique has proven to be extremely valuable during exhaustive troubleshooting efforts. As you well know, those tapped power resistors are all custom parts. Replacing them with individual fixed resistors is usually cumbersome. The green corrosion on the resistor leads/terminals is an indication the resistor maximum body temperature has been exceeded or, the resistor has been operated for long periods of time at maximum rated body temperature.

    • @bandersentv
      @bandersentv 2 дні тому

      That corrosion is also just from age. I'm currently working on another set from his collection that has five open power resistors. They also have green corrosion

    • @billharris6886
      @billharris6886 2 дні тому

      @@bandersentv The age definitely adds to the corrosion problem. Bare copper is very susceptible to corrosion, so the component manufacturers tin the copper. Also, since the solder flux is not cleaned off after soldering, the flux still remains active so, combined with the heat, accelerates the corrosion. Sorry to sound like a know-it-all, with my background initially in TV repair, then aircraft transceiver design, and component engineering, I wanted to complement your instruction in TV servicing by adding some background that is not normally included. If it is making things more confusing, I will keep quiet.

    • @bandersentv
      @bandersentv 2 дні тому

      @@billharris6886 Not at all, please keep it coming. Much of my knowledge comes from guys like you. The failure rate in this particular component is really remarkable. I did a video about them ages ago. I went through about a dozen chassis and every single one was open. That led me to develop a replacement component since it is an oddball value. You'll be seeing it in the next installment.

    • @billharris6886
      @billharris6886 2 дні тому

      @@bandersentv Cool, sounds Great; thanks! I am not surprised at the failure rate of the tapped power resistor. When I saw how it was mounted, I could see it would be unable to dissipate the required amount of heat without cooking itself.

    Thanks for the tips! Just fixed my 10" Techniques bass speakers using glue, money notes (paper, not cloth) & a touch of newspaper. Works perfectly at low to medium volume, with some slight distortion at high. It had a hole in it from when my brother tried to vaccum the speaker, which eventually ripped around a third of the speaker.

  • @chetpomeroy1399
    @chetpomeroy1399 2 дні тому

    I might be mistaken, but perhaps that resistor in the flyback can be replaced with a modern power resistor. By 1948, if one didn't live in or near one of the largest three U.S. markets, it wouldn't have been practical to own a TV set in areas like Houston, Minneapolis, Cincinnati or Omaha.

    • @bandersentv
      @bandersentv 2 дні тому

      Yes, it will be. They still make nearly identical resistors today.

    In the early days the cabinet and electronics were HUGE and the crt was tiny. I remember seeing a pre war TV in our favorite thrift shop in the early 70s. It had a tall cabinet with 3 chassis in it and a small square crt. I really wanted it because it was so old and cool but parents weren't about to buy it for me and I doubt I could have done anything with it unless I got lucky and it worked. Had a lot of light house and radio style tubes in it.

    • @oldradiotvsc9836
      @oldradiotvsc9836 2 дні тому

      Interesting story! Although not a prewar set, I remember seeing a late 40s RCA set, perhaps a 630 based or possibly slightly later with 10" screen and built in AM radio as well, at a garage sale, and wished I could buy it, but it was $50 and like you, my parents were not about to buy it for me (nor for themselves) and my allowance money was not near enough to cover it! The sellers said the radio worked, but not the TV (not surprising!).

    The people who bought that model where more then likely wealthy and could afford the unit along with paying the electric bill to run it T hat was a top self unit with 30 tubes for the best picture quality possible for that time period would you not agree ?
